After a brief reunion with Sura, the pair is caught by Glaber, who is furious at the rebellion. Sura is taken away, destined for slavery, while the Thracian is condemned to die in the gladiatorial arena in Capua, a punishment for his insubordination. 2. The Arena Scene: Birth of a Legend
Glaber’s ambition gets the better of him. Driven by his wife Ilithyia’s urge for grander Roman glory, Glaber decides to redirect his forces away from the Thracian border to march against Mithridates in the East. This violates the treaty and leaves the Thracian villages defenseless.
But their freedom is short-lived. Glaber and his men track them down the next day. As punishment, he condemns Sura to a life of slavery and sentences the nameless Thracian to death in the arena.
