Its influence is vast. The anti-heroic, self-destructive protagonists of later novels, from Albert Camus' The Stranger to the works of Miroslav Krleža, can trace their lineage directly back to the Underground Man. The novella also stands as a direct and powerful rebuttal to the utopian optimism of Nikolai Chernyshevsky’s novel What Is to Be Done? , offering a bleak but potent counter-argument about the nature of humanity.

Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground is considered the first existentialist novel. It’s a raw, angry, and philosophical deep dive into free will, spite, and modern alienation. Before you judge the underground man, ask yourself – haven’t we all felt a little like him?
